Summary

In Chapter 26, the first three trailers Parnell checked were empty but men’s voices came from the fourth trailer. Two dogs tied near the fourth trailer suddenly ran toward Parnell and Clyde. Parnell had just shot the second dog when a man with a gun trained on her asked what she was doing. Parnell tried to see evil in his eyes to prove he was worthy of being killed but could not see anything. When she identified herself as railway police, they fired at the same time but Parnell’s shot killed the man. Clyde jumped at another of the men, crashing his head into the trailer. Parnell shot a third man as he stood in the doorway of the trailer.
