Bless Me, Ultima Author Biography
Rudolfo Alfonso Anaya was born on October 30, 1937 to Martin and Rafaelita Anaya in the rural village of Pastura, New Mexico, the fifth of seven children. Growing up in the small villages of Pastura and nearby Santa Rosa, Anaya was immersed in the oral culture of his Mexican-Indian ancestors and became familiar with the traditional farming and ranching practices that are depicted in his stories.
After moving to Albuquerque at age fifteen, Anaya graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1955. He attended Browning Business School from 1955 to 1958, then enrolled at the University of New Mexico where he earned both a B.A. (1963) and an M.A. (1968) in English. In 1972, shortly after finishing Bless Me, Ultima, Anaya also earned an M.A. in guidance and counseling from the University of New Mexico.
