Chapter 14 Summary

With Aunt Maggie returned to their lives, Richard and his family make the decision to move to Chicago realizing they will never save enough to cover all their needs. Richard times his announcement to his bosses to avoid their negative shift in attitude towards him and bids farewell to the optical factory.

Chapter 14 Analysis

The chapter returns to a theme outlined earlier in the book – that of the structuring of systems -- legal, administrative, and social – in such a way to insure that blacks would not move outside of the sphere that whites thought appropriate for them.
