Carlos and Svensson work together to create a dangerous biological weapon that can infect millions just a few weeks after its release. Svensson’s goal is to control the cure for the virus, thus turning him into the most powerful man in the world. Carlos, however, wants to use it to wipe out Israel. Svensson informs Carlos that a man named Thomas Hunter claims to have seen a successful virus infecting the entire globe within three weeks in a dream. Despite the outlandish way he claims to have found this information, Svensson asks Carlos to learn what Thomas knows. Then, he must kill Thomas because Thomas clearly knows more about the virus than Svensson himself.

Meanwhile, Thomas Hunter lives with his sister Kara in Denver after escaping many enemies in New York. He is trying to get back on his feet and re-enter society as a new man. However, after his shift at Java Juice, an unknown man with a gun attacks him. Thomas manages to kick the gun away and knock the man out before climbing onto the rooftop. Once there, however, he is hit by something (which he believes is a bullet) and is knocked unconscious. Thomas then wakes up in another forest world. He meets a man named Bill, who encourages Thomas to drink the water multiple times while showing signs of addiction. Thomas, who believes the events in Denver were the real dream, tries to follow the man into the woods but runs into a field where the grass cuts deep into his skin. He sees a horde of red-eyed bats and passes out when one shows its fangs.

Thomas wakes up in a garbage can in Denver and rushes back to the apartment believing that his sister could be in danger. He finds a receipt for a large loan he took under a pile of rejection letters and two manuscripts he wrote years before. He believes he is a target because of his failure to repay a loan that he used to get his mother out of debt and buy Kara a new car. He passes out in the bathroom and wakes up in the black forest again. He sees a white bat in the distances and feels like he must catch up to it. Flies and black bats attack him as he races after the white bat. He hits a tree, breaking his arm as he bleeds out from multiple bite wounds. His clothes are shredded, and there is only a loincloth for cover as he sees the white bat perched across a white bridge over a river. The black bats begin to retreat as he crosses the bridge and passes out on the other side. Again, Thomas wakes up in Denver unsure of which world is real. Kara returns home and Thomas explains the danger they are both in. Kara dresses the wound in his head before telling him that she will not leave Denver. He resolves to stay with her regardless of the danger but ends up falling asleep due to the medicine she gave him to stop the pain.

In the forest world, two white bats called Gabil and Michal look over the damaged body of Thomas. A young woman named Rachelle arrives and decides to heal him with Elyon’s water, claiming Thomas as her future husband. When Thomas heals, she leaves and the two bats, known as the Roush, explain to Thomas that he has amnesia, and his dreams of Denver happened 2,000 years ago. He knows them as “histories.” They believe Thomas is dreaming about a life before the Great Deception when the Raison Strain, a virus that kills people within 3 weeks, wiped out humanity. They take Thomas to the outskirts of a village, where Thomas falls asleep. When he wakes up in the real world, he is convinced that Denver is the dream. He startles Kara when he names the Raison Strain before they read the newspaper learning about a new medicine called the Raison Vaccine. Thomas knows from the forest that the vaccine will mutate in the deadly strain. Kara decides to test his dreams by putting him back to sleep. She tells him to find the name of a horse that wins the Kentucky Derby later that day. Meanwhile, Michal begs his master Elyon to stop Thomas from interacting with the first reborn man named Tanis. Michal believes Tanis will try to fight the black bats and start another war. Elyon tells Michal that they must let the two men make their own chooses, but Elyon implies that he already knows the outcome. Michal despairs but submits to Elyon’s will.

Thomas wakes up and asks Michal about the winner of the Kentucky Derby. However, Michal thinks he is crazy for asking and instead explains how there are a million people living in the colored forest and that there is no death except in the black forest. Before they reach the village, Michal finally tells Thomas the winner is Joy Flyer. He leaves Thomas and the latter meets with Rachelle and her brother Johan. They enjoy a joyous dinner and Thomas falls asleep again. When he wakes up back in Denver, he tells Kara the winner of the derby, which they will not know for another five hours. They try to call the Center for Disease Control and another federal corporation, but they hang up on Kara. Thomas can only yell the name of the future winner of the Derby to a man named Bob before the person hangs up the phone.

They decide to fly to the CDC headquarters in Atlanta. Once there, Thomas must fake an illness to get somebody to talk to him. This man, named Aaron, does not believe Thomas. Kara calls the man a fool. She tells him that she made $385,000 betting on Joy Flyer. The two leave and decide to head to Bangkok. Meanwhile, Carlos is already there, as Svensson had sent him to kidnap Monique and kill Thomas to learn what both of them know about the Raison strain.

While flying, Thomas falls asleep again. In a dream, he meets the first human in the future Tanis. Tanis and Rachelle’s father (Palus) teach Thomas about the Great Romance. They explain to him that love is a gift from Elyon and that no one in the colored forest needs love, but they all want it. They tell Thomas that he needs to woo Rachelle in some way. Eventually, Tanis talks about invading the black forest to defeat Teeleh and the black bats. Thomas tries to dissuade Tanis, whose passion for the fight pushes him to show off some fighting moves that impress Thomas. However, as Tanis begins to talk about how he is going to invade the black forest, Thomas passes out.

After landing in Bangkok and successfully attempting to speak with Monique, Thomas gets back to sleep. Tanis asks Thomas to join him in fighting the Shataiki, but Thomas and Michal are against it. As Tanis leaves, Thomas plays hide and seek in the forest with Rachelle. After Rachelle teaches him the fruit and their abilities, she leaves and Thomas goes back to sleep. In Bangkok, Thomas and Kara try to speak to Monique before her announcement. She ignores them and gets on stage. She announces that she has created an airborne vaccine that can cure the most dangerous of illnesses, including HIV. Although some countries have not approved it, she plans to send it out to Africa by the end of the day. After the announcement, Thomas tries to talk to Monique. However, she refuses, calling him insane. Frustrated, Thomas sends Kara to meet with Monique’s father and kidnaps Monique. At the top floor of a nearby hotel, he tells her his story and she does not believe him. He decides to sleep and find an impossible fact about her vaccine that will convince her that he is telling the truth. He ties her up and goes to sleep. However, as he does so, Carlos enters the room, knocks Monique out, and waits for Thomas to wake up.

In the other world, Thomas rushes for the black forest, determined to learn information from Teeleh. The latter tells Thomas that he landed in this world in a spaceship along with Bill. Teeleh promises to show the ship to Thomas if the latter brings Tanis to the black forest. He offers Thomas some fruit, but the Thomas sees an attack on Bill. Thomas runs out of the first. He finds Michal who leads him to a beautiful lake with a waterfall. He feels compelled to dive in and hears Elyon’s voice asking if Thomas loves him. Thomas feels guilty for every terrible thing he has done in his life. However, Elyon says he loves Thomas and the latter feels rejuvenated. When he leaves the water, he falls asleep.

In Bangkok, Monique wakes Thomas up and the later attacks Carlos. He tells Monique the obscure information he learned from Teeleh and she says that she believes him. Carlos, realizing that capturing Thomas is not an option, takes Monique and commands Thomas to lie down before shooting him twice in the chest. Thomas wakes back up the forest with Rachelle who tells him the others are preparing for the Gathering. After noticing that he does not have any wounds despite the blood beneath him, Thomas goes with Rachelle to the Gathering. Once there, he is overwhelmed with happiness and ends up climbing a cliff to meet with a boy. Supposedly, the boy is a representation of Elyon. The boy tells Thomas that the black forest exists to give people a choice; but, if any were to drink Elyon’s water, they would release death upon the world. He also says that Thomas must decide if his dreams are real, implying that both might be real. He mentions that a certain kind of fruit could stop Thomas from dreaming. Thomas descends the cliff and falls asleep.

Kara wakes Thomas up and they realize that, despite all the blood on the sheets, he has no wounds. Kara takes Thomas to meet Monique’s father Jacques. He only believes Thomas after he receives demands for all information on the vaccine in exchange for Monique’s life. Jacques convinces the police to let Thomas remain under house arrest at the Raison mansion. Thomas, with the help of Jacques’ secretary, tries to get help from the other governments. Only Gains listens to his story and tells the president that he will look into the vaccine. Desperate to find Monique, Thomas goes back to sleep and asks Rachelle the place from where Monique needs rescuing. She tells him she imagines a cave filled with white bottles near a river. Tanis then asks Thomas to see weapons and a canoe that he and Johan have built to attack the Shataiki. Thomas, once again, tries to dissuade him from attacking. It is while he is playing hide and seek with Rachelle that he realizes that he loves her. Then, he falls asleep.

Back in Bangkok, Thomas convinces Jacques and Gains to let him got to an abandoned concrete building that is located in a spot that is very similar to Rachelle’s description. As he is flying over, Svensson attempts to talk to Monique, but she refuses to talk to him. As Thomas enters the building, Carlos sees him on the monitors and Svensson demands Jacques hand over the information within the hour. Thomas finds Monique and she gives him her ring to make her father cooperate with him before telling Thomas to run. As he leaves, Carlos shoots him in the head, but Thomas is able to bounce into the other world for a second, heal, and return without missing a step. When he returns to the Raison mansion, he learns that Jacques has already given in to the demands. Thomas then asks Kara to knock him out and agrees to go speak with Teeleh again.

In the other world, Thomas heads to the black forest. He convinces Teeleh to show him the ship without calling Tanis. Teeleh does so, but it is a deception, and the Shataki capture Thomas. He sees that Bill’s crucifixion. Teeleh tells Thomas to kill Bill. However, Thomas shows them a dagger blessed by Elyon that scares all the Shataiki away. He leaves the forest, but he sees Tanis on the other side. When Thomas rushes to him, he passes out and wakes up again in Bangkok. There, he learns that Jacques has discovered that the mutation is real and that the vaccine can latch onto cells and cause organs to rupture within three weeks of infection. Jacques and Thomas try to call various governments with the results, but none of them will listen. Thomas goes back to bed, defeated.

Meanwhile, in the forest, Tanis decides to visit Teeleh in hopes of understanding his enemy. Teeleh decides to show Tanis his true form because Tanis does not believe that he has a beautiful appearance. Teeleh tells Tanis that he can get as much knowledge as he wants if he eats the fruit of the black forest.

As Tanis eats the fruit, Teeleh tells him that Thomas dreams of the histories because he drank the water of the black forest. Thomas, led by Michal, arrives and tries to stop Tanis from listening to Teeleh. However, Tanis angrily proclaims that Thomas is not the only one deserving of knowledge and drinks the water. Teeleh and his army rush into the colored forest and see Tanis dragged away. Thomas rushes back to the village and pulls Rachelle and Johan into the Thrall to wait out the night.

After a very short dream in Bangkok where Thomas learns that Gains is heading to Bangkok for a summit with as many government leaders as they could convince to talk to them, Thomas wakes up back in the forest. He, Rachelle, and Johan head outside and see a world turned black. Rachelle and Johan fight over the tarnished fruit. Michal arrives and tells Thomas they are giving in to evil and that Thomas must get them to the lake. Thomas does so, and they see Elyon in his child form crying in terrible agony surrounded by the animals of his dying land. As he leaves, Michal tells the three that they need to go through the black forest and into the desert where they might find safety. They do so, fighting off the Shataiki until they reach the desert where they are no longer followed. Eventually, they rest in a valley of rocks. Rachelle begs Thomas not to dream of Monique anymore.

However, Thomas wakes up in Bangkok one last time and meets in a conference with many world intelligence officers. Once Thomas tells his story, many of them reject it again. Some even believe that the panic over the virus would cause more deaths than the virus itself, as well as ruining the economy of many countries. Gains tries to stand up for Thomas after Thomas is accused of being paid to ruin Raison Pharmaceutical. Thomas angrily tells them that the world is about to collapse and all Carlos and Svensson work together to create a dangerous biological weapon that can infect millions just a few weeks after its release. Svensson’s goal is to control the cure for the virus, thus turning him into the most powerful man in the world. Carlos, however, wants to use it to wipe out Israel.
