Chapter 7 Summary

Dave goes to the county courthouse to find a connection between Dio, Dixie Lee, Mapes, and the Star Drilling Company. Dave has little luck. Afterward Dave drives out to the lake and watches as Dio, Cletus, and Dio's friends spend a day on the water. Dave watches through binoculars and is spotted toward the end of the afternoon. Dio and his group drive up to the road where Dave is and confront him. Dave and Dio get into a verbal confrontation that ends with Dave punching Dio in the jaw. The police are called and Dave is taken in for assault. Eventually Darlene bails Dave out. Darlene drives Dave back to his car and tells him that their relationship is over despite the fact that Dave asks her to move in with him. Darlene is clearly scared, but Dave has no idea why...
