Mabel Dagmar

Mabel "May" Dagmar is a dowdy young woman who attends a prestigious East Coast college on a scholarship. She has a frosty relationship with her parents who run a dry cleaning business in Oregon. Mabel is out of place with her sophisticated roommate, Ev Winslow, who befriends her suddenly and invites her to spend the summer at her family's compound on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Mabel is out of place in this world of privilege, but she aspires to more in her life and wishes she could be part of the Winslow clan.

Mabel does have some domestic skills which come in handy when she and Ev share Ev's cottage. She is always out of place with the Winslows, though, because she does not have any money which means she has no new clothes. She has not had the social experiences that they take for granted.
