Summary

In Chapter 45, May locks Ev in the bathroom at Bittersweet and goes to the Dining Hall to call Galway to tell him what has happened to John and his mother. May is convinced that John killed his mother after May had told him that Birch is his father. Apparently, he then jumped to his death out of guilt. The police took May and Ev's statements and Galway questions her about what she had said to John yesterday but May claims that she can't remember. May then confronts Galway about his being married and orders him out of the cottage.

No one can find John's truck and because Ev knows that John wouldn't let it out of his sight, Ev is convinced that someone else had murdered John and his mother and drove away in his truck. One morning, May notices that the bolts...
