Summary

In Chapter 4, Ev and Mabel take a train from New York to Vermont. Mabel has brought a book to read this summer: Paradise Lost. Ev tells Mabel that they will have only six days to get Ev's cottage, Bittersweet, cleaned up and ready for inspection by her father. If it does not pass, she will not inherit it. From the time that Ev had invited Mabel to spend the summer back in February, Ev had tried to bring her up to speed on society life. Mabel's mother had also coached her long distance about being wary of life's newfound generosity. On the night before Mabel and Ev had left for Vermont, Mabel's mother called Mabel to remind her to be sweet during her time with the Winslows over the summer.
