Summary

In Chapter 1, The Roommate, Mabel Dagmar shares a college dorm room in New York with Genevra "Ev" Winslow but she might as well be invisible for as much attention as Ev pays her. Ev comes from a wealthy family and has experiences that Mabel can only imagine. Mabel is shocked when she receives an invitation to a reception hosted by the college president in honor of Ev's 18th birthday. Ev is donating a Degas painting to the university and it will be a big affair. Ev is shocked that Mabel is considering attending the event. Ev tells her that her mother had sent out the invitations, but Ev did not want to go. Ev says that they will make a blue dress for Mabel to wear and Mabel is thrilled.
