Point of View

The majority of Big Summer is told from the first-person point of view of Daphne, the main character and heroine of the novel. The exception is the Prologue which is written from the point of view of a third-person narrator. Consider: “You’ll go crazy out there, her father told her when Christina asked if she could take the summer cottage that perched on the edge of the dune in Truro” (1). The narrator refers to Christina as “she” and “her”. The beginning of the quote consists of Christina’s father’s words to her, hence the use of “you” to refer to Christina. This section of the novel takes place in Cape Cod when Daphne was a child growing up in New York. There is no way that Daphne could narrate this section of the novel since she did not know Christina Killian.
