Part 1, Chapters 22, 23, 24 Summary

When Alex returns home very late that night, his friend John Sampson is waiting for him on his front steps. Sampson, Cross's partner and best friend before he left for the FBI, comments on Cross's late-night arrival. The two men have a couple of beers and talk about Sampson's wife and Jamilla. Cross misses working with him and begins to plot about getting him into the Bureau. Sampson tells Cross that his wife is pregnant and he would soon be a father.
