Summary

In Chapter 9, the day began as a bright and beautiful one for sailing to Penikese Island. Osh and Crow picked up Miss Maggie and they headed out on the water. They arrived at the harbor and saw one small skiff tied at the pier. The bird keeper was nowhere in sight as they headed over the hill to the far side of the island where the lepers had lived. Along the way, Osh spied some woadwaxen, a flowering plant he used to mix yellow paints. Crow collected some for him. They arrived at the large central building that had been the leprosarium, a hospital flanked by several small cottages. Miss Maggie shared some of the things she learned during her visit to the library. Many of the lepers had come from countries like Japan, Turkey, Tobago, China, and Cape Verde. Crow asked where...
