Corruption

The author introduces the theme of corruption through the character Abbasi and his obsessing over all the men he has to bribe in order to keep his factory going, as well as how he wrestles with this morally. When readers first see Abbasi, he is hosting an official from the state Electricity Board with whom he has to bribe with the sum of 500 rupees and a gift of a shirt made from the factory (25). After the factory closes, Abbasi drives to the Canara Club and thinks about the corruption. During this scene, readers are really introduced to the theme of corruption as Abbasi goes through the list of officials he has had to bribe and pay off since he reopened his factory.
