Norday and The Orkney Islands

Although Norday is a fictional island, the Orkneys are real islands situated at the very northern tip of Scotland, near the Atlantic Ocean six miles from the mainland. The neighbouring Shetland Islands are located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Both have miles of shoreline and are made up of many different islands. Many of these islands are not inhabited by people. These islands are part of Scotland, though their traditions are also rooted in Norse because of the Vikings who settled there in the 8^th and 9^th centuries.

Ingle

Ingle is the farm or croft on fictional Norday Island where Thorfinn and his family live. It is located on farmland that is arable and viable until the late 1930s, when most of the island is destroyed by the construction of the aerodrome and other military structures.
