Chapter 24 Summary

Outside a tiny church that used to be a dry-goods store, Paul D sits on the sidewalk drinking a bottle of whiskey. Paul D remembers a family of slaves that managed to stay together. He envies them.

Paul D thinks back on Sweet Home and Mr. Garner, who trusted him. Then Mr. Garner died from a stroke. Sixo thought he was shot in the ear, but the others wondered where the blood was if he was shot. Mrs. Garner brought in the schoolteacher, who abused the slaves badly.
