Summary

Present resumes the action after Grace’s lunch with Esther and Diane. Grace goes to her room, and Jack locks her in and lowers all of the shutters in the house. A moment later she hears Jack leave, but her stomach is full so it does not make her nervous. She recalls once when Jack was gone for three days without feeding her. Her current room, where she has lived for six months, contains a bed, a barred window, and a bathroom. Sometimes she wishes Jack would die in a car accident, most hopefully before Millie comes to live with them in four months’ time.
