Love

In this novel, love is a theme of the plot because it is a strong motivating force for many of the main characters. For Ethan, love of Lena is what causes him to go to the Great Barrier to fight Incubuses in order to save her even though she has asked him over and over to leave her alone. Ethan knows that Lena loves him and that she would never push him away if she did not think he was in danger, and that is what motivates him to save her.
