Drugs and Addiction

One of the principal functions of the book is to educate the reader about the destructive realities of drug abuse and addiction, and one method that the book utilizes by is conveying information about the chemical causes of destructive medical effects of addiction. David specifically focuses on methamphetamine as a case study, for meth was the drug to which Nic formed an addiction. David writes about how meth releases dopamine in the brain and then leads to a dopamine deficiency, which causes anxiety and depression. “This compels the user to take more of the drug, causing more nerve damage, which increases the compulsion to use” (133).
