January is the narrative's protagonist, a 29-year-old romance writer. She is also the narrative's first person narrator. Her best friend is Shadi . She makes a bet with Gus, a literary writer, about writing a book in each other's genre. Later, Gus becomes her romantic interest. January's father had an affair with Sonya.

At the beginning of the narrative January is physically mature, but in is emotionally immature in spite of being in her later twenties. Through her description of the January that existed prior to the beginning of the narrative, readers learn that she lived with her boyfriend and had a successful career as a romance writer. She also had a thriving relationship with her parents who were still married.
