Summary

Madge returned to Chicago in Chapter 29, and on her way, she decided she would learn how to read. She also realized that what she felt for Hemp could not be ignored and considered following this inclination. She was received well by Sadie’s household, and Sadie apologized for what she said about Hemp’s past, making amends. When Madge spoke to Richard, he informed her that Hemp had been asking about her. After her work day, she went to the church to wait for him and sat next to the reverend. While they waited for him, Madge could detect illness in the reverend and asked him to give her his hands.
