Summary

Madge and Olga questioned Sadie’s health because they believed the spirit of James Heil to be taking over her physical body in Chapter 18. Both women felt the presence of the spirit in the home, and their fear prompted them to scheme and invite Sadie’s father to visit. Madge saw Hemp at the house upon returning and was aware that Sadie asked him never to return. He was drunk, and when he asked about her bedroom she unquestioningly led him there. She consented to sex, but she realized that Hemp could not love her the way she needed to be. A day later, Michael visited Sadie with the intention to tell his brother that he paid his way out of the war. She lied and told him James was no longer there.
