Summary

Chapter 7 begins with Hemp attending Church, and his devotion inspired the reverend to ask him to be a deacon of the congregation. His connections at the church knew about his search for his wife, Annie, and the revered suggested that he consult “’a spirit woman’” to rule out the possibility of Annie’s death (55). The woman he mentioned was Sadie, and she conducted a séance for dozens of members of the church’s congregation. There, Hemp believed Annie’s daughter, Herod, spoke to him through Sadie, confirming that Annie was still alive. He decided to visit Sadie at her home, where she confirmed her knowledge of a secret past event. Hemp left the room in fear. Madge followed Hemp back to his home after the private séance at the start of Chapter 8. She was intrigued by and felt comfortable with him...
