Sofia opens the envelop with excitement. She's been waiting years for this invitation. She calls to her husband, Aidan, and reads from the card to tell him that they've been invited to the annual awards dinner for The Three Rivers Philanthropic Society. Her mind wanders to what she'll wear and how long she should wait to accept the invitation.

Sofia and Aidan had moved to Pittsburgh twenty years ago, struggling financially. Sofia had wanted to be part of the old money scene, although they couldn't afford it then. Sofia and Aidan waited, making all the right moves in their investments and housing choices. They'd also saved over the years for the contribution of one million dollars that was expected at the awards dinner.
