Summary

Chapter 7 - “Doctor J”:

This chapter begins with a description of conflicting financial factors affecting Theranos and its development late in 2009 and early in 2010. On the one hand, America (and the world) were recovering from the major economic crisis of 2008; on the other hand, companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Uber were starting to make their significant presence felt.

A more positive factor in the development of Theranos is the interest of a man named Jay Rosen (nicknamed Dr. J), a physician working with drugstore corporation Walgreens to find new innovations to improve the company’s reputation and status. Dr. J hears of Theranos and its work and becomes an enthusiastic advocate of Walgreen’s entering into partnership, much to the dismay of Kevin Hunter, whose company is hired by Walgreens to investigate Theranos’ technology.
