Summary

The novel opens by expositing about Yokoya Port, a small town on the edge of the Whaletail Strait, where thousands of ships pass through on their way to the great city of Omashu, but they never stop at Yokoya Port. Instead, the local economy runs on fish and agriculture. While the town is technically in the Earth Kingdom, it sits near the borders of each of the four nations and the residents do not care much about national or international politics or conflicts. Because Yokoya Port is so separate from the rest of the world, Jianzhu and Kelsang choose it for their experiment. Jianzhu and Kelsang set themselves up in a two-story meeting hall in town. Kelsang, an Airbender Monk, sets out several toys with care, which comes from the Air Nomad method of finding a new Avatar, which involves the Avatar finding...
