Part 1, Chapter 7 "The Exploiters and the Exploited" Summary

Dagny is in Colorado supervising construction of her Rearden Metal rail line from Ellis Wyatt's oil fields. She struggles with those who refuse to use Rearden Metal. The wooden bridge over a 1,200-foot gap is very old and rotted. Hank Rearden arrives, studies the bridge and quickly shows Dagny his long-ago developed design for a Rearden Metal bridge. He is in Colorado looking for a copper mine. They agree something is wrong with the country. Everything is growing cold.

Dagny returns to New York because she promised James she would speak at a dinner about Rearden Metal. There are reports that Rearden Metal is a threat to public safety because its chemical composition is unsound. It is brittle and will crack without warning. She and her brother.....
