Anse goes back into the house where they heard the music playing in order to return the spades and stays in the house a long time. Cash and Jewel wonder what is taking him so long, before their talk turns to the possibility of buying a gramophone. Finally, Anse returns and takes Cash to Peabody so that he can get his leg properly set and splinted.
The next morning, Anse sends his children off and tells them he will meet them later. While they sit in the wagon eating bananas and watching the train go by, they see their father coming toward them, looking taller and prouder than ever, with his new dentures. They also notice that he is carrying a suitcase and leading.....
