Summary

In Chapter 38, once the canons arrived and the siege began, the soldiers were not able to leave the trenches even to get their meals. The women got permission from the officers to take food to the trenches. During Isabel’s first trip to the trenches, the other soldiers were happy to see her but Curzon was angry. Isabel flirted with Curzon, telling him that the sergeant had told her she should kiss Curzon. They were interrupted by a shell exploding and Curzon told her he needed to tell her something. He told her that he would not be coming back to the camp because he and some of the other soldiers were on a special assignment. He also told Isabel that he loved her. In the noise and confusion, she thought she had misunderstood him but he was gone before she could ask...
