The Model Firetruck

The model firetruck had belonged to Woods. The model symbolizes Grandma's effort to hold onto Wood's memories. When Genie leaves the truck on the floor and Grandma breaks it, the truck symbolizes Genie's feeling that he cannot do anything right. When Grandma gives Genie the truck, it becomes a symbol for her ability to move on with her life and her willingness to share her memories with Genie.

The Flag

The folded American flag that is on the dresser in the room Genie and Ernie share is a symbol of the sacrifice Wood made for his country by going to Desert Storm. There is also a medal that is similarly symbolic. There is another flag in Grandpop's bedroom. The second flag is never explained other than serving as a place for Grandpop to keep his handgun.
