Summary

Chapter 1 opens with question “#460” (1) from Genie's notebook. He explores the word “poop." He says it is stupid, and he wonders if “poopidity” is a word. Genie and Ernie are using shovels to throw the poop away from Samantha's area. Samantha is Grandma and Grandpop's dog. Ernie is making a game of the chore, throwing it into the woods. Genie tries to mimic Ernie's action, but his shovelful of poop flies backwards, slamming against a window of the house just as Grandma asks what they are doing.

The story drops back in time to Ernie and Genie's arrival at Grandma and Grandpop's house. Their parents bring them for a month-long visit. Genie's parents, Sheila and Ernest Harris, are having marital problems and plan to go to Jamaica for a two-week vacation, leaving Ernie and Genie with Ernest's parents, Brooke and Mary Harris.
