Summary

Chapters 1 through 6 – The rain continues, off and on, for Ari and his family’s entire trip back to El Paso. At one point, Ari’s mother asks him whether the rain ever reminds him of the accident that broke his legs. Ari realizes that instead, it makes him think more about Dante. The next day, when Ari goes to pick up Legs from Dante’s, he learns from Dante’s father that Dante is in hospital after being beaten up by a gang of boys who caught him kissing another boy. Mr. Quintana tearfully asks Ari why Dante never told him about himself, and Ari says it’s not always easy for sons to talk to their fathers.
