Style

Point of View

The point of view is first person with Margaret as the narrator. This allows the reader to know Margaret's thoughts as well as her conversations with God. This point of view helps young readers as they can easily relate to her experiences. As this is a coming-of-age novel for Margaret, the reader sees how she reacts to the usual preteen pressures of school, family, and friends. Margaret's preteen perspective makes her succumb to peer pressure, disagree with her mother, awkwardly interact with boys, and wonder what her teacher thinks. The title guarantees a first person perspective. In her talks with God, the reader is shifted from the happenings of Margaret's every day life to her emotions and needs that are related to those happenings.
