Margaret Simon

Margaret is the narrator, and the title is one of her concerns. She is eleven years old and has just moved to Farbrook, New Jersey from New York City with her parents, Barbara and Herb. Margaret's family also includes her paternal grandmother, Sylvia, who she is very close to and who lives in the city, and her estranged maternal grandparents, the Hutchins, from Ohio. As the new girl, she wants to fit in, and a neighbor her age, Nancy Wheeler, introduces her to girls from their sixth grade class. Margaret hopes to develop breasts and menstruate.

From the beginning of the novel, Margaret has religious concerns as she talks to God. Her mother was raised Christian, and her father was raised Jewish, and problems with the Hutchins caused them to raise Margaret without a religion......
