Thursday morning, Margaret has a hard time eating. Barbara tells her it is fine to be nervous on the first day of school. Barbara does not understand why Margaret is wearing loafers without socks. Barbara says she has to walk almost a mile and will get blisters. Margaret's feet are hurting by the time she gets to school and admits her mother was right. She notices girls wearing knee socks.
