Chapter 1 Summary

Eleven-year-old Margaret Simon has just moved to the suburbs and wants to be like everyone else. When she is confronted with body and religious issues, she struggles as she tries to conform. Not only does she learn about religion and puberty, she learns also how to view other people.

Margaret prays for God's help when she has to move to New Jersey. Margaret sees her mother smelling her underarms to check her deodorant. Margaret thinks people do not have body odor until they are twelve, and she is not quite twelve yet. Margaret finds out Farbrook, New Jersey is her parents' top place for them to live.
