Act 2, Scene 7, Part 2 Summary

Thomasina throws down Septimus' book, saying that Newton's theory is incomplete and that his analysis of "bodies in heat" misses the point. Lady Croom refers to the cube and cone, and asks whether she's referring to geometry. Thomasina speaks of geometry with disgust, saying that it's all about order, while the truly important determining factor in life is randomness. The conversation then turns to her getting married off before she becomes too educated and therefore undesirable. Thomasina settles down to drawing the diagram that Valentine used earlier as the basis for his work on the computer.

At that moment, Noakes comes in and Lady Croom takes him to task not only for the engine, but for ruining the natural beauty of her gardens in the same way as the engine.....
