Act 2, Scene 7, Part 1 Summary

Chloe and Valentine, dressed in clothes from the earlier time period, sit at a table. Gus goes through a large wicker basket filled with similar clothes in search of something to wear. In a conversation that has clear echoes of Thomasina's first conversation with Septimus, Chloe and Valentine discuss Newtonian theory, how the future can be predicted through mathematics, and how the unpredictability of sexual attraction ruins the theory. Hannah comes in, also in period clothing and carrying Bernard's article on Byron. As she shows it to Valentine, Chloe helps Gus choose clothes. He then goes out with him to find shoes.

Valentine goes back to work on his computer. He continues to discuss Bernard's article with Hannah, how he's likely to become famous as a result of it, and.....
