Act 1, Scene 4 Summary

Hannah looks through Thomasina's mathematics notebook and asks Valentine whether the theories she wrote in it are any good. Valentine goes into a long, complicated explanation of what they are, how Thomasina discovered them, how she didn't have the means to actually prove them, and how they can't be right because she was only a child. Hannah asks whether Thomasina's principles can be applied to the theory that Valentine is working on. He says that it's not the same, because in the present day, there are so many other factors to be considered. He goes on to explain that the reason he chose his particular theory, based on growth patterns of grouse populations, is because records in the game books of the local grouse population go back hundreds of years to.....
