Hannah looks through Thomasina's mathematics notebook and asks Valentine whether the theories she wrote in it are any good. Valentine goes into a long, complicated explanation of what they are, how Thomasina discovered them, how she didn't have the means to actually prove them, and how they can't be right because she was only a child.
