Chapter 12 Summary
Ikem Osodi arrives at the University of Bassa, where he is to give a lecture. Over two thousand are present. Ikem delivers his speech, in which he argues that the storyteller is often seen as a threat. His speech lasts twenty minutes.
Ikem describes his methodology for giving speeches. He states that he must always be what the audience is not; in other words, if the audience is radical, he must be conservative; likewise, if the audience is conservative, he is liberal.
Ikem entertains questions from the students and faculty. The question and answer period shifts from a discussion of a proletariat-run state to jokes made about market women and peasants. Ikem comments on the state of the people who are in power in the government. He urges the students to try to pressure the government to put an end to corruption.
