Book 8, Chapter 4 Summary
Oliver returns one afternoon with the news that the crooked attorney refuses to sell him the land claims that are rightfully his, and laments the fact the land would probably be worth 30 times its purchase price when the irrigation project is complete. Susan breaks down and yells at Oliver that she's reached the end of her rope of trusting that things will get better. Oliver blames himself for not filing the land claims himself and admits he's too trusting.
Book 8, Chapter 4 Analysis
Susan and Oliver reach the breaking point in their relationship when trust, hope, charity and even kindness have all but evaporated. The dark despair that has hovered on the edge of their lives for years now seems to engulf them both.
