Book 8, Chapter 1 Summary
Shortly after he begins his work with the U.S. Geological Survey, Oliver Ward receives a letter from his friend General Tompkins saying that he has located British investors for the Idaho Mining and Irrigation Company. Oliver decides to finish his work for the USGS, which will take nearly a year, before beginning the irrigation project. Fifteen months after leaving, Susan finally returns with the children to Idaho and her husband. Oliver proudly takes her to a new, landscaped home he's built for them - a realization of a "dream home" they discussed when they were desperately poor. Susan is somewhat dismayed to find that Oliver has re-hired Frank and Wiley to work on the project.
