Book 7, Chapter 5 Summary

On a quiet moonlit night, when Oliver stays in town very late to discuss his project with another group of potential investors, Susan ventures outside and walks beside the river. She is startled out of her reverie when she hears someone riding a horse and singing. As the rider draws closer, she stumbles and falls and Oliver rushes up to help her. Relieved, she laughs aloud until she realizes that he is drunk. That, plus word that he'd still found no investors, infuriates Susan who tells him to sleep in the shack outside their house.

Book 7, Chapter 5 Analysis

Susan's frustration with her husband flares into outright anger, finally. The reader feels the helplessness and futility she must have felt in her situation and begins to wonder whether things will ever change or improve for the Wards.
