Book 7, Chapter 4 Summary

By spring 1885, the Idaho Mining and Irrigation Company still has no financial backers and both Frank and Wiley leave to take jobs elsewhere. Frank's parting from Susan is one of suppressed emotion. Ollie gives the family a scare one afternoon when he crosses his father's suspension bridge alone to bring a package from town to their housekeeper, Mrs. Briscoe. Oliver climbs out on the bridge and rescues his son from falling, but Susan and Oliver learn that Ollie brought the housekeeper a whiskey bottle and that she has several stashed on the premises. Susan demands, and Oliver assents, that Mrs. Briscoe be fired. When Susan goes into labor shortly thereafter, Ollie gets on his horse and crosses the bridge again to get a friend to summon a doctor from town while he gets a neighbor woman to come and help.
