Book 7, Chapter 3 Summary

When a second potential financial backer for Oliver's valley irrigation plan decides against investing, the Wards decide to build a house with the help of Frank Sergeant and his assistant, Wiley. They plan to live in the house until they find investors, and then sell the house to the company that decides to develop the Boise Canyon. In a long letter that accompanies her submission, "The Last Trip In," to Thomas Drake at Scribner's, Susan gives vivid glimpses of their domestic life with the news that she is pregnant again.

Book 7, Chapter 3 Analysis

Susan and Oliver display resilience in the face of further disappointments. In her letter to Thomas, she insists that they are happy despite everything. It is difficult to tell whether this is the truth, or whether she has convinced herself with her own boosterism.
