Book 6, Chapter 2 Summary

Oliver Ward returns to New York to be with Susan and see his new daughter, Elizabeth. They exchange angry words over her failure to let him know that another child was coming, and over the fact that he did not let her know he was working on a project different from the one she thought: a massive irrigation system that will bring land development to the Snake River area of Idaho. They discuss the pros and cons of staying in New York and of going back to Idaho, but Susan realizes there will be yet another trip west - not as an adventure but as a form of exile.
