Book 6, Chapter 1 Summary

Susan's friends, Augusta and Thomas, dote over her when she returns. She tells Thomas that she's writing a novel based on her experiences in Leadville, which he offers to publish as a serial in his magazine. The subject of Oliver Ward and the west is ignored altogether, or when Oliver's name is mentioned Augusta acts as if he's something to be avoided like a mess on the sidewalk. Susan confides in Augusta that she's pregnant with her second child and that Oliver doesn't yet know about the baby.

Book 6, Chapter 1 Analysis

Susan is once again rejuvenated and supported by her friends, even though her future with Oliver is still somewhat uncertain.
