Book 5, Chapter 6 Summary
Sadly, the Wards say farewell to their friends in Mexico as Susan prepares to go back east yet again while Oliver goes to Idaho in search of more mining work. When she says goodbye to Frank Sergeant, he reminds her that she kissed him once by mistake and asks if she would give him a real kiss. As she reaches up with puckered lips, he grabs her and kisses her hard on the mouth. During the 250-mile trip on horseback to Mexico City, Susan continues sketching and tries to remain cheerful. As narrator Lyman Ward points out, however, this is the death of her third dream for the family.
