Book 5, Chapter 5 Summary

Oliver returns with the news that the mine is probably workable but would not be profitable. Susan half-jokingly asks if he can write a favorable report anyway so they can stay in Mexico, which she's grown to love. Perturbed, Susan wonders aloud whether things keep falling through for Oliver because of his honesty or just bad luck. He replies that he must do what he thinks is right. Susan answers that the whole family must pay the price for his actions. They end the day in a wordless, bruised silence.

As Susan's domestic instincts are once again thwarted, she begins to show anger toward Oliver. Although Susan is apparently unaware, Oliver is even more frustrated than she is, but unable or unwilling to express it.
