Book 5, Chapter 3 Summary

Mexicans in the village stage an elaborate ceremony for Oliver's three-week foray into the mountains to survey the mine with the owners and prospective buyers. Susan is struck with the unbroken, indigenous nature of the people and their celebrations. Fascinated, she produces an abundance of sketches - more than she will need for her piece for Scribner's magazine. When Oliver greets the villagers, he seems stiff and formal, contrasted with their warm gestures, hand kisses, and courtly behavior. As Oliver rides off, Susan realizes that their destiny lies in his hands.
