Book 5, Chapter 2 Summary

Susan Ward awakens in their new quarters in Mexico and watches life stir in the village below, enchanted with its leisurely, Old World pace. When Oliver awakens, he tells Susan that when his company takes over the mine the pace of things will speed up. He lets her know that a mine surveyor from a competing group is on the scene and she asks whether that means fighting and lawsuits. Oliver reassures her that it will not, and asks whether she'd like to stay if he gets the job as mine manager.

Book 5, Chapter 2 Analysis

Although thrilled at the prospect of staying in Mexico, Susan is once again confronted with fear of isolation and doubts about whether she wants her son to be raised there. Guardedly, she allows her hopes to be raised by their prospects in Michoacan.
